Annual Archaeology Field Session

The 2025 Tyler Bastian Field Session in Maryland Archeology will be held at the Teague's Point archaeological site (18CH1005) in Hughesville, Maryland from 23 May through 1 June, 2025.

The site was only recently documented thanks to avocational archaeologist, Kevin Brady. Mr. Brady collected artifacts on the agricultural fields at Maxwell Hall Equestrian Park in the 1970s prior to the State owning it. Mr. Brady recovered hundreds of historic artifacts, as well as a few precontact artifacts, including pottery, olive green bottle glass, over 200 pieces of clay pipe, lead and lead shot, flint, animal bone, and metallic artifacts like a spoon, a key, and equestrian buckles. Many of these artifacts date to the late 17th to mid 18th-century.

In December 2023, MHT archaeologists conducted a ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey of the area from which Mr. Brady had collected. The GPR survey identified several deep anomalies just under the plowzone that are indicative of cellars and/or subfloor pits. You can learn more about the previous work and research conducted on our MHT blog.

Based on the artifacts collected by Mr. Brady and during the surface collection, this appears to be a domestic site with intact subsurface features worthy of further investigation. The field session will be the first subsurface testing of the site, so make sure you come out and join this exciting opportunity!

In addition to the contributions of the ASM, funding for this project was provided in part by Preservation Maryland and the Maryland Historical Trust.
