Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties (Architecture)

Who Can Submit MIHP Forms?

While anyone may submit information about a property for inclusion in the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties, the information must meet specific guidelines and standards linked below, or it will be returned for editing and further documentation. All grant-funded survey and documentation projects, including comprehensive county-wide surveys, and individual site research projects, as well as regulatory compliance projects must submit information to MHT in a format that is consistent with the standards described below.

Before completing or submitting a Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties form, please contact the MHT’s Architectural Survey Administrator, Allison Luthern at (410) 697-9585 for assistance and information.

Placing a Property on the MIHP

1. Request a MIHP Number

Inventory numbers are assigned only in coordination with the MHT. Local jurisdictions cannot assign numbers. The formal request should be made in writing and should include the names and addresses of all properties with the sites clearly located on a 7.5-minute United States Geological Survey (USGS) topographic quadrangle map (1:24,000-scale).

Please indicate the location of the property on the 1:24,000 map and ALSO include a zoomed-in view of the map with the exact boundary clearly marked.

This may be e-mailed to the Architectural Registrar. If an inventory number has not already been assigned, please contact the Architectural Registrar, Mary Kate Mansius, for assistance by e-mail at mary.mansius@maryland.gov or by telephone at (410) 697-9570.

2. Download and Fill Out the MIHP Form

Standards & Guidelines for Survey Data

The Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties is built upon documentation gathered through on-site description and analysis of structures and other resources. The MIHP form is based on the National Register of Historic Places form and requires thorough narrative description detailing a resource’s physical integrity, condition and its place in Maryland’s history. This written analysis is supported by photographs and cartographic information, and forms often include floor and site plans to scale.

All survey data must conform to the Standards and Guidelines for Architectural and Historical Investigations in Maryland (2019) to ensure high quality research and the archival nature of submissions to the MIHP.

Digital Forms and Photographs

The 2019 Standards and Guidelines for Historical Investigations in Maryland, Appendix B incorporates a revised set of Standards for Submission of Digital Images to the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties. This update addresses the requirement for shooting and printing archival digital images and for submitting electronic versions of the MIHP form.

Note: Digital photographs submitted to the MIHP are held to a 75-year archival standard which requires uncompressed TIF images shot at 300 dpi to create a 5 x 7 image with a minimum resolution of 3000 x 2000.
